Help Shape the Future of Independent Local News in Australia

About LINA

The Local and Independent News Association (LINA) supports Australia’s independent, digital-first local news providers. Our goal is to strengthen and sustain independent journalism, ensuring communities have access to diverse, high-quality news.

About the Role

LINA is seeking a Non-Executive Director to join our Board and help guide the organisation’s strategic direction and governance. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the future of local news in Australia.

Who We’re Looking For

We welcome applications from individuals with experience in:

  • Strategic fundraising and philanthropic networks – bringing governance-level insight into income diversification, donor engagement, and sustainable funding strategies.
  • Local publishing and journalism - with insights into the challenges and opportunities for local news.
  • Information technology - particularly with relevance to digital media.
  • Finance, risk, or legal expertise – to support strong governance and decision-making.

We encourage applications from diverse backgrounds and regions. Board diversity will be considered in our appointment. Prior board experience is welcomed but not essential.

Commitment & Expectations

  • Attend bi-monthly Board meetings (usually every two months, online or in person).
  • Contribute strategic insight and guidance to the executive team.
  • Participate in a subcommittee or key focus area where appropriate.
  • Attend annual LINA Summit.

This is a voluntary role, with reasonable expenses reimbursed.
