Job Title: Chair of Seafood Consumers Association

Location: Melbourne, Victoria

Position Type: Honorary/Volunteer Position

About the Seafood Consumers Association (www.seafoodconsumers.global). Get in on the ground floor by being the first Chair of The Seafood Consumers Association, a dedicated global organization whose mission is "To advocate for the rights and interests of seafood consumers globally by promoting access to quality, sustainably harvested affordable seafood, fostering transparency and ethical practices within the seafood industry, and educating the public on the benefits and importance of sustainable seafood consumption."

Position Summary:  The Chair of the Seafood Consumers Association will provide strategic leadership and governance to guide the organization toward promoting informed seafood choices and consumer protection. As an honorary role, the Chair will work closely with the Board, staff/committees, and stakeholders to drive initiatives, influence policy, and strengthen the association’s public presence. The position requires a Melbourne-based individual with a love of seafood and a passion for consumer rights. An International Advisory Committee/Board with a deep understanding of the seafood industry and seafood issues works with the CEO. The role is initially for 3 (three) years on a small, committed Board.

Time: It is anticipated that there will be four (4) board meetings per year, with a maximum of one day per quarter. Separate meetings/activities will depend on the individual and how much extra time they are willing to devote.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a sharp vision for the association, ensuring alignment with mission, goals, and values.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Foster productive relationships with industry, government, environmental groups, and consumers to advocate for sustainable and transparent seafood practices.
  • Advocacy and Policy Influence: Represent the association in public forums, government consultations, and media to promote policies protecting consumer rights, food safety, and sustainability.
  • Board Management: Lead Board meetings, work with members to set priorities, and ensure effective governance and accountability within the association.
  • Financial Oversight: Oversee the financial health of the association, including budget management, fundraising, and resource allocation to support key programs.
  • Public Communication: Function as a spokesperson for the association, communicating with clarity and credibility in all public engagements.
  • Education and Outreach: Drive initiatives that educate consumers on seafood health benefits, quality standards, and sustainability issues.

Key Qualifications

  • Location: Must be based in/around Melbourne, Victoria.
  • Industry Knowledge: Ideally an in-depth understanding of consumer rights but some base knowledge in these additional areas would be ideal - seafood health, nutrition and chronic diseases, traceability and sustainability, food security, education, etc.
  • Leadership Experience: Proven leadership experience, ideally in non-profit/charity or advocacy settings, with a track record of setting strategic direction.
  • Advocacy Skills: Strong ability to influence policy, engage with diverse stakeholders, and represent consumer interests effectively.
  • Financial Acumen: Familiarity with non-profit finances, budgeting, and resource management.
  • Excellent Communication: Strong public speaking, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to Ethics and Integrity: A high standard of ethical conduct, transparency, and commitment to the association’s values.

Benefits of the Role: While the Chair position is an honorary/volunteer role, it offers the opportunity to influence meaningful change in promoting consumer rights, influencing governments, improving consumer interaction with the seafood industry, and contributing to sustainability and food security efforts. This role will be highly fulfilling for someone with a passion for seafood, environmental responsibility, and consumer protection.
