About Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS):
Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS) Inc. is a community-based, specialist service that provides trauma-informed, evidence-based support to victim-survivors of sexual violence, their personal and professional supports, and the broader Tasmanian community. We deliver primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention programs, envisioning a world free from sexual violence. Our mission is to promote the safety, rights, and recovery of victim-survivors while actively working to challenge the systems and structures that perpetuate sexual violence.

Our vision is for a healthy, safe Tasmania free from sexual harm, and our strategic plan for 2023–2026 outlines a commitment to being a well-run, viable organisation that contributes to cultural change, informed by the voices of victim-survivors and evidence-based practices.

SASS offers a wide range of services, including free and confidential counselling, case management, crisis support, advocacy, and education. We work closely with other organisations, such as Laurel House, to provide statewide services aimed at both victim-survivors and children displaying harmful sexual behaviours. Additionally, SASS is committed to prevention through education initiatives such as the Consent and Relationships Education (CARE) Program, ELEVATE: Understanding and Responding to Sexual Harm, and PAST (Prevention, Assessment, Support and Treatment of Harmful Sexual Behaviours) program, ensuring that our impact extends beyond crisis intervention to long-term cultural and systemic change.

The Role:
As a Board Director, you will:

  • Provide strategic oversight and governance to ensure SASS continues to meet its mission of supporting victim-survivors and preventing sexual violence.
  • Help shape the long-term vision and objectives of the organisation.
  • Oversee financial performance, risk management, and compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Offer insights and leadership on key areas such as trauma-informed care, clinical governance, community engagement, and advocacy.
  • Act as an ambassador for SASS, promoting its mission and building partnerships across the community and sector.

Diversity and Inclusion Statement:
SASS is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our work. We believe that diverse perspectives and experiences enhance our ability to deliver compassionate, effective services to the community. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, individuals with disabilities, and those from LGBTQIA+ communities.

Our Board seeks to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and to ensure that all voices, particularly those of marginalised communities, are heard and respected in our governance and decision-making processes.

Skills and Experience:
We are seeking individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Clinical governance and trauma-informed care
  • Community engagement, promotion and advocacy
  • Fundraising and business development
  • Quality systems management

Previous Board or governance experience is highly regarded but not essential. Passion, integrity, and a commitment to SASS’s mission are key.

Time Commitment:
Board members are expected to attend quarterly board meetings, or more frequently as required, and to participate actively in a Board subcommittee.

Benefits:

  • The opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause and make a tangible difference in the community.
  • A collaborative and inclusive Board environment.
  • Professional growth through governance experience and networking with sector leaders.
