Eltham Cemetery
The Eltham Cemetery Trust is recruiting additional voluntary Trust (Board) members. This is an important and interesting time for the Cemetery, with ongoing recognition of our highly regarded community services, our focus on further development of the cemetery grounds and preparing for Trust succession planning. The Eltham Cemetery, spanning 12 picturesque acres, has provided interment services for its community since 1858. Conducting approximately 275 interments annually, including both burials and cremated remains, the Trust is committed to providing dignified and respectful services in a
natural setting.
Role of the Trust (Board)
The Trust is comprised of members of the community who volunteer their time, skills, experience and perspective to ensure the ongoing governance, financial accountability and preservation of the Eltham Cemetery as a community asset for current and future generations. The Trust is effectively a Board, and the responsibilities of a Trust member can be likened to those of a company director.
Trust Member Positions
The Eltham Cemetery Trust is a well-recognised and financially sound organisation, and you will be joining a skilled and cohesive volunteer Board, working with an established General Manager and experienced Board Chair. These roles offer you the opportunity to gain experience in governance, strategic planning, and community engagement; network with other community leaders and stakeholders; and enhance the heritage and environment of a respected community institution.
The Trust is looking for suitable candidates with skills and experience in the following areas, noting Trust members are supported with training provided through the Department of Health:
● A genuine interest in and commitment to the mission and values of Eltham Cemetery (living or working locally would be an advantage but is not essential)
● Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
● Basic understanding of governance and financial management principles
● Previous experience in a similar role or involvement in community organisations is desirable but not essential
● Proven leadership, strategic planning; critical thinking experience
In alignment with our skills matrix and succession planning, we are seeking candidates for the
following specific positions:
● Trust Member with Leadership Potential: We are looking for at least one individual who has
previous experience in chairing a Trust, Board, or similar committee. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the potential to grow into a leadership role within the Trust.
● Finance, Risk, and Audit Committee Member: We are also seeking a candidate with the
qualifications and capability to join our Finance, Risk, and Audit Committee. The successful
candidate should have the potential to eventually lead this committee.
The Cemetery holds significant importance to its community, and Trust members and staff are
dedicated to providing exceptional service and care and preservation of natural and serene grounds. You are invited to consider joining the organisation in making a meaningful contribution to the
community.
