Are you committed to the protection of Queensland’s environmental, and built and cultural heritage? National Trust of Australia (Queensland) [NTAQ] is inviting nominations from experienced Non-Executive Directors to fill four upcoming Board vacancies for a term of 3 years, from December 2024 to December 2027. These are paid positions with Directors meeting at least ten times a year with some site visits in regional Queensland. Meetings are usually held at the NTAQ Headquarters located at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast but may be held in other locations.  Directors may also be invited to participate on Board approved Committees.  NTAQ is a member-based charity with over 19,000 members and a portfolio of 15 properties spread across Queensland from the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Hospital in the south-east to Cooktown Museum in the far north.

Nomination process

Expressions of interest to nominate to fill a Board vacancy are invited from suitably qualified individuals in the form of a:

  • covering letter (of no more than two pages) demonstrating alignment with the skills and competencies (listed below) and outlining your motivation for joining the NTAQ Board
  • current CV (of no more than three pages) including the names and contact details of two professional referees
  • candidate photo; and
  • candidate ballot statement (no more than 200 words) to be used if successfully put forward to the election

Candidates with skills and competencies in the following categories are encouraged to apply:

Essential skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated understanding and experience of the role, risks, and responsibilities of a Director, including an understanding of the ethical, legal, and financial responsibilities. The completion of the AICD course or recognised equivalent is highly desirable
  • Financial literacy as it relates to the competent interpretation of company financial reports
  • Strategic thinking specifically the demonstrated ability to identify and develop strategic direction as it relates to the mission of NTAQ
  • Emotional Intelligence (EQ) related to effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to successfully build and manage sustainable relationships related to the mission of NTAQ.
  • Demonstrated passion for and genuine interest in at least one of the following:
    1. environmental conservation
    2. built heritage including historical architecture
    3. cultural heritage expertise
    4. wildlife conservation and welfare
    5. heritage conservation
    6. tourism development, marketing, and communications
  • Demonstrated understanding of the uniqueness and participation in the interests of promoting regional Queensland

Desirable competencies:

  • Demonstrated business skills, experience and commercial acumen
  • Advocacy and governance skills and experience
  • Stakeholder and community engagement
  • Philanthropic engagement
  • Marketing, brand development and public relations
  • Strategic portfolio management of heritage properties

Timeline for Expressions of Interest

  • Expressions of interest close at midnight Monday 12 August 2024
  • All nominated candidates will be assessed by the NTAQ Nominations and Governance Committee under rule 8.4 of the Constitution in accordance with its Charter
  • Short-listed nominees will be contacted by a Director of the NTAQ Board to advise of interview meetings in September
  • Successful nominees will be recommended to the Board by the Nominations and Governance committee for decision at the September Board meeting
  • After the outcome of the September Board meeting, successful candidates will be put to NTAQ Member voting
  • NTAQ Member Ballot takes place from 11 October – 3 November 2024
  • New Directors will be announced publicly at NTAQ Annual General Meeting on Saturday 7 December 2024
