About Us
The Sydney University Settlement (The Settlement) is a long-established, well-respected and vibrant neighbourhood centre based in Darlington, NSW. We offer programs that connect people and communities, that support and enrich opportunities for children, young people, families and adults and provide a safe space for community of all ages and backgrounds. We are committed to social justice and reconciliation and our service support many are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and families.
The Settlement also owns several properties adjacent to the hall that provide affordable social housing.
About the Role
The Settlement is recruiting volunteer Non-Executive Directors to join the skills-based board. The Settlement is seeking three (3) new Directors, including a Treasurer. We are looking to strengthen our Board by attracting people with skills in at least one (1) of the following areas: finance, governance, properties, fundraising and strategic partnerships.
First Nations people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and people with disability are strongly encouraged to apply.
Your Commitment
Board meetings are held bi-monthly with five (5) meetings per year and one (1) Annual General Meeting. Directors are expected to have a minimum 80% attendance rate.
The Board adopts a Committee structure with several working subcommittees. Directors are expected to join and participate in at least one (1) subcommittee. Subcommittees meet prior to the Board meeting.
In addition, Directors meet at least one (1) time per year for a planning workshop.
Meetings are primarily held via technology with the occasional face to face meeting and a face to face AGM.
About You
We seek motivated and committed candidates who align with our culture and values. Candidates should demonstrate Collaborative communication skills and a proactive and positive attitude.
Candidates will need an appreciation of the not-for-profit sector and the community sector.
You will need experience and knowledge in at least three of the below:
- High level of financial literacy
- Formal qualifications and/or AICD graduate is desired or previous governance experience of at least 3 years
- Strategic thinking and risk management
- Fundraising and capital raising and strong corporate networks
- Experience in social housing management
- Community service sector knowledge and understanding
- Stakeholder engagement or community consultation
- An understanding of the policy context of either community service provision and/or social and affordable housing provision
- Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander history and/or culture and commitment to working with First Nations people
- Legal expertise
- Understand the duties of a Non-Executive Director under the Corporations Act 2001
