The aim of Kids Cancer Research Trust
Kids Cancer Research Trust is a non-profit trust which raises funds to support the following objectives:
Supporting hospitals to purchase equipment that is used at direct treatment levels.
Some hospitals struggle to secure enough government funding to purchase and upgrade some equipment that can vastly improve treatment standards, levels and safety. We have most recently purchased software used in the administering of chemotherapy drugs for the Women's & Children's Hospital.
Funding programs in either scientific and medical research, fellowships or scholarships for persons involved in the direct care of patients.
Improvements in treatment and diagnostic methods have only happened due to vital ongoing research. We have recently funded a project being conducted at the Sydney Children's Hospital and also funding a Nursing Research Fellowship at the Women's & Children's Hospital.
Providing direct financial assistance that will assist in better treatment options or therapeutic outcomes for patients.
Having a child diagnosed with cancer can have serious financial consequences for families. Some parents need to cease work and move house to be closer to Hospitals that provide the required treatment and to care for their child. Relocating of families, improving play areas at homes for therapeutic benefits and providing improved sterile environments to enable patients to go home are just a few of the assistance projects we have funded.
Providing unique accommodation for patients and their families during treatment periods.
Some treatments go through an 'on and off' period and are only conducted at certain interstate or metropolitan hospitals. We have a number of houses around Australia that patients and/ or their families can stay during treatment periods. Our most recently opened has been 'The Playhouse' which supports patients being treated at The Children's Hospital at Westmead.
Increase awareness of prevention measures.
Research has shown that increased awareness, and early detection can significantly reduce the mortality of cancer. We promote healthy living, sound diet and exercise as contributing factors in reducing cancer.
Your donation enables us to continue to make contributions to valuable programs detailed above.
Cancer is the second biggest killer of children aged under 15, after accidents. Despite the increasing occurrences of cancer, overall paediatric cancer treatment and survival rates are improving. About 70% of children diagnosed with leukaemia are cured. The incidence of childhood cancer is about 14 per 100,000 children.
The common types of cancer in children are acute leukaemia, brain tumor, lymphoma, neuroblastoma and Wilms' tumor, whereas the common adult cancers, such as cancer of the bowel, breast or lung are rarely found in children.
